When's the last time you did?
You should have smoke detectors installed, at the least, between each bedroom and the rest of your house, at the top of each stairway, in utility rooms, basement, attic and heating equipment areas. Don't install near kitchen cooking areas where they'll be accidentally set off.
Smoke detectors should be tested once a month.
