You may not be in the mood to spend money on your house right now, but even small expenditures can save you big bucks. And, even more importantly, neglecting home maintenance can really cost you when small fix-it chores become huge repair nightmares.
Pay special attention to these tips:
*Water bills are becoming more expensive all the time, so promptly fix any water leaks around your house.
*Inspect your home's exterior to make sure your stripping, caulking and sealing are watertight and repair as needed.
*To prevent a flooded basement, have your home's sewer lines flushed. Also, if you have a sump pump, prime it with water to make sure it's working.
*Service your heating system and clean your chimney to keep them running at peak efficiency.
*Inspect the seals around windows and doors and repair as needed to prevent heat loss.
*Inspect your roofing material for cracking, buckling and warping and repair as needed to prevent roof leaks.
*Check for cracks in driveways, sidewalks and stonework and fix as required to prevent water penetrating and freezing, causing greater damage.
